TORONTO, Ont. – Celebrate Ontario’s inaugural Local Food Week at the Brewers Plate on Wednesday, June 4, an indulgent evening featuring unlimited sampling of a menu inspired by partnerships between renowned local food chefs and Ontario Craft Brewers. Now in its seventh year, this charitable event has been established as a memorable toast and thank you to the province’s brewers and farmers.
Participating chefs and breweries from across Ontario are collaborating to create dishes that will tell a story about local food and beer and the delicious ways they can be prepared. Catch the once-in-a-lifetime pairings of Chef Lora Kirk of Ruby Watchco in Toronto’s east end with Sawdust City Brewing, ChocoSol Traders’delights harmonizing with Black Oak Brewing, and Chef John Robertson of The Big Carrot with the ever-popular Wellington Brewery. See full list of chef, brewer and artisanal partners below.
Proceeds from this year’s event will directly support work that is growing the diversity and distinctiveness of Ontario-grown product. The Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation, the beneficiary of Brewers Plate 2014, works to preserve the world’s largest permanently protected greenbelt, right here in Ontario.
“We are excited to receive such a generous donation and to be a part of an event that celebrates what’s grown in Ontario’s very own backyard,” says Burkhard Mausberg, CEO of the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation and the Greenbelt Fund. “We will use this contribution to support our continued commitment to both local food and craft brewers, especially given their increasing interest in sourcing locally grown product, including Ontario hops.”
At nearly two million acres, Ontario’s Greenbelt protects prime farmland, forests, wetlands, open space and rural communities around the Greater Golden Horseshoe. More than 5,500 farms in this region produce more than a quarter of all apples consumed in the province and more than 85% of its peaches and grapes. In keeping with the vision of The Brewers Plate, the Greenbelt is also home to local hops and supports Ontario hop farms, which enable brewers to purchase their ingredients locally.
