FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 7, 2016
On November 1, the Hon. Hal Jackman, OC OOnt CD LLD, was celebrated at Queen’s Park as the 2016 recipient of the Friend of the Greenbelt Award. The Hon. Hal Jackman was recognized for his work with the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust to preserve this vital landscape and water recharge area.
“I am honoured to receive the Friend of the Greenbelt Award, and am very proud of my work with the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust to preserve this important landscape,” said the Hon. Hal Jackman upon receiving the award. “The Greenbelt must be expanded, and anything that we have that is green now must be kept green.”
The Hon. Hal Jackman spearheaded the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust’s million-dollar fundraising campaign in 2010, and has long supported the protection of the Moraine. His own family farm in King Township is protected through the Land Trust against redevelopment. The Trust works with landowners in the Moraine through agreements, acquisitions and on-going stewardship to protect the Moraine for future generations.
“As the Province proposes to add 21 urban river valleys and 7 coastal wetlands to the Greenbelt, it is fitting that we recognize the impressive contribution Mr. Jackman has made to protecting the Oak Ridges Moraine from development,” said Friends of the Greenbelt CEO Burkhard Mausberg. “Mr. Jackman is a successful investor and businessman, and we know that his commitment to the Oak Ridges Moraine reflects how valuable this natural resource truly is.”
The Oak Ridges Moraine is known as ‘Ontario’s rain barrel’ and groundwater from the Moraine flows to over 65 watercourses, providing clean drinking water, agricultural irrigation, and flood protection to the region.
Since 2006, recipients of the Friend of the Greenbelt Award have included Sarah Harmer, the Hon. Bill Davis, Plan B Organic Farm, Grape Growers of Ontario, the Hon. Dalton McGuinty, and the Neptis Foundation. Recipients have all contributed to the success, protection and growth of Ontario’s Greenbelt.
