The Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation is an independent, charitable organization, focused on supporting activities that preserve and enhance the agricultural, rural and environmental integrity of Ontario’s Greenbelt. The Foundation is looking for an innovative and well-qualified professional to lead its Farm to School Program. The Position The Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation has funded a range of activities to enhance the economic viability of farmers in the Greenbelt. One of the areas identified through past activities requiring further research and policy development is the institutional procurement of Greenbelt-grown and processed food. The Foundation has established a contract position for up to two years to pursue local food procurement policies for schools across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Working under the direction of the Research and Policy Director, and in collaboration with other individuals and organizations working on related local food issues, the incumbent will: 1. Undertake a variety of research to develop an understanding of current food procurement and food provision systems, collect and understand lessons learned from the experiences of other jurisdictions to increase locally sourced foods in schools or other public institutions, and investigate the real and perceived barriers to changing procurement systems. 2. Identify and pursue opportunities to pilot a local food procurement policy in school boards in the Greater Golden Horseshoe. 3. Develop options for a local food purchasing policies and pursue their adoption. The Qualifications - strong, in-depth knowledge of current issues facing the agricultural and environmental sector in Ontario; - demonstrated senior level experience in policy and research management; - relevant university degree(s); - proven ability to manage multiple priorities and work within tight deadlines; - excellent problem-solving skills, including the ability to effectively manage budgets and to identify and recommend trade-offs and creative solutions; - strong marketing and communications background; - excellent inter-personal and negotiation skills that facilitate successful relationships with internal and external colleagues; - ability to work cooperatively as part of a small and dynamic team; - results-oriented, proactive, self-starter with ability to identify and capitalize on opportunities and challenges; - interest in the environment, agriculture and related policy development; and - a sense of humour.
