Ontario Farmers’ Markets Celebrate Buying Local with Free Market Bucks

TD and the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation
Support Ontario Markets

With the support of $25,000 from TD Bank Group, the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation will help connect TD’s loyal customers with their neighbourhood farmers’ market by giving away free Market Bucks to purchase fresh, local food for their family. Each Market Buck is redeemable for $5 worth of merchandise at select local markets.

The Greenbelt Foundation connects 114 of the diverse markets found in the Greenbelt region. Together, the Foundation and these markets provide farmers with new business opportunities, creative marketing tools, and new products; that, in addition to supporting the local communities each market serves and promoting the bounty of the Greenbelt.

“Whether it’s fresh produce or meat you’re looking for, our local markets connect us to our farmers and give us an opportunity to buy from them directly,” says Burkhard Mausberg, CEO of the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation. “TD’s Market Buck giveaway program is a way to encourage people to visit their neighbourhood markets and support the local economy.”

Spending Market Bucks and investing in local markets helps reduce food miles, support local farms, and Ontario’s Greenbelt, which is nearly two million acres of protected farmland, forests, wetlands, open space, and rural communities.

“Providing access to local produce, is a win-win-win – for farmers, local markets and consumers," said Mary Desjardins, Executive Director, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. "This program is a great opportunity for us to support both the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation and the communities where our employees and customers live and work."

Twenty-nine TD Canada Trust branches in Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge, Guelph, Wellington County, Peterborough, Lindsay, Port Hope, and Cobourg will participate in the program, which begins on Monday, June 2 to kick off Ontario’s Local Food Week. Each TD branch will have 200 Market Bucks to give away to customers and each participating market will also hand out 50 five-dollar coupons.

Ten markets are supported in the project including:

  • Aberfoyle Farmers' Market
  • Cambridge Farmers' Market
  • Cobourg Farmers' Market
  • Elora Farmers' Market
