The Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation is participating in World Poetry Day by sharing a spoken word poem by renowned slam poet Shane Koyczan that pays tribute to the land and the farmers who sustain us. “The Growers Prayer” can be listened to online and shared on social media to mark World Poetry Day.

A new report, Global Cities: Housing Prices in Major Urban Centres, from the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation finds that housing price increases in the Greater Golden Horseshoe are comparable to similar booming markets in major urban centres around the world. With 56% of the world’s population now living in cities, the report suggests that as globalization continues to bring more residents to cities, planning solutions to increase housing choice are needed.

Winning photos celebrate water in its many forms and iterations as the Greenbelt grows to protect urban river valleys 

The Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation, the Professional Photographers of Canada and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection announced the winners of the Second Greenbelt Photo Contest at a special event at McMichael. 

Selected by a jury of professional photographers and creative employees from the three participating organizations, the winning photographs captured the beauty of the lakes, rivers, and waterways of the Greenbelt. The water theme was chosen to celebrate the province’s plan to add 21 urban river valleys and 7 coastal wetlands to the Greenbelt.

“The Greenbelt is not only a legacy for the next generation of Ontarians, but a powerful statement of who we are and what we value,” said Burkhard Mausberg, Friends of the Greenbelt CEO. “The protection of farmland and the natural environment as the region grows is our road to a healthy and sustainable future.”

A new report, Ontario’s Good Fortune: Appreciating the Greenbelt’s Natural Capital from Green Analytics and Sustainable Prosperity found that in addition to storing over $11.17B of carbon, the Greenbelt provides $3.2B annually in ecosystem services to the region. The report, commissioned by the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation, assessed the value of final services provided by the Greenbelt that Ontario residents benefit from.
