ONTARIO’S GREENBELT PROTECTED AS PART OF ENVIRONMENT PLAN

Greenbelt Foundation pleased that Ontario government is committed to a protected Greenbelt as part of Ontario’s environmental framework

 

Ontario’s Environment Plan, released today, states that the Ontario government is “committed to protecting the Greenbelt for future generations.” This renewed provincial commitment underscores the important contribution the Greenbelt makes to helping Ontario address the impacts of climate change and makes clear that a protected Greenbelt will be an important part of Ontario’s environmental framework. The plan recognizes the role the Greenbelt’s natural systems play in mitigating the impacts of extreme weather in our changing climate.

Birds in a Changing Climate” highlights 31 species of Greenbelt birds that are climate threatened or endangered and actions to mitigate these impacts

The Greenbelt Foundation has partnered with Ontario Nature for an in-depth look at how a changing climate impacts bird populations in the Greenbelt. Birding is one of many day-to-day activities enjoyed by Ontarians in and around the Greenbelt that is being impacted by climate change. Birds in a Changing Climate identifies birds that are climate threatened and climate endangered, and identifies action that helps birds to thrive.

“Gardening in a Changing Climate” identifies how gardeners can take action in their own yards to reduce impacts of climate change in our region

The Greenbelt Foundation has partnered with the Royal Botanical Gardens for this first report in a new series exploring how a changing climate impacts day-to-day activities enjoyed by Ontarians in and around the Greenbelt. Gardening in a Changing Climate identifies how gardening is already being impacted by climate change and actions home gardeners can take to adapt to and mitigate these impacts.

GREENBELT FOUNDATION ACCEPTING FUNDING APPLICATIONS FOR FALL GRANT ROUND

The Greenbelt Foundation invites applications for funding to protect and enhance Ontario’s Greenbelt and its water systems in particular

Applications are now open through the Greenbelt Foundation’s Prosperous Greenbelt and Resilient Greenbelt funding streams. Eligible charities and non-profit organizations are encouraged to submit their project ideas by September 28, 2018. The Greenbelt Foundation particularly welcomes applications for projects related to enhancing the Greenbelt’s water resource systems and the role they play in the continued prosperity and high quality of life offered in the Greater Golden Horseshoe.

Niagara-on-the-Lake – The Greenbelt Foundation has partnered with the Golden Horseshoe Food and Farming Alliance and Niagara Region to host a day-long workshop and farm tour focusing on small plot agriculture. Over 50 farmers and stakeholders are participating in the event to hear from a range of experts on the opportunities for small scale farms.

New Greenbelt River Valley Connector Program will fund projects to realize the potential of newly protected Greenbelt urban river valleys

TORONTO, April 30, 2018–The Greenbelt Foundation and Park People have launched a new funding program to help connect people and communities to protected urban river valley (URVs) systems throughout the GTHA. The Greenbelt River Valley Connector Program will provide $100,000 in funding, to be matched one to one, to support five or more place-based projects a year that will help people explore, celebrate and enhance their local urban river valleys that are often undiscovered and underused.
