The Greenbelt Foundation congratulates the Hon. David Crombie on his appointment as Chair of the Greenbelt Council as well as the other accomplished individuals joining the council.
In his previous capacity as Chair of the Advisory Panel for the Co-ordinated Land Use Planning Review, Mr. Crombie’s collaborative approach brought together a cross-section of stakeholders to embrace a shared vision for a prosperous and sustainable Greenbelt as well as growth across the Greater Golden Horseshoe region.
Today’s announcement establishing a renewed Greenbelt Council with an expanded role fulfils a final commitment from the Province as part of the Co-ordinated Review process. The Greenbelt Council will be an important voice for civil society and key sectors such as agriculture in holding governments to account in the next phase of the Greenbelt and Growth Plan implementation. Achieving objectives established in these plans will involve the combined efforts of the province, municipalities and various sectors and the Council will contribute to monitoring progress against key milestones.
The Greater Golden Horseshoe is home to 7 in 10 Ontarians and is expected to grow by over 4 million to 13.5 million people by 2041. The Greenbelt Council will play an essential role in ensuring that our region works for residents and remains competitive, while the Greenbelt continues to thrive as a working landscape that generates $9.1B in economic activity annually. By protecting water and green spaces, supporting agriculture and fostering smart growth, the Greenbelt is also integral to regional health and prosperity.
The Greenbelt Foundation looks forward to working with David Crombie and the Greenbelt Council to support its mandate.
"The Greater Golden Horseshoe is home to more people than BC and Alberta combined, with more than 4 million additional residents expected by 2041. The Greenbelt and thoughtful growth policies are essential to ensuring our region remains economically competitive, with livable communities and a sustainable future. We look forward to working with the Greenbelt Council to this end." – Edward McDonnell, CEO Greenbelt Foundation
