Statement from the Greenbelt Foundation on Doug Ford's Pledge of Support

We welcome the news that Ontario PC Party leader Doug Ford has committed to the preservation of Ontario’s Greenbelt.

It has been heartwarming to see the outpouring of support from across Ontario from people who are passionate about the importance of protecting some of Canada’s best farmland and natural landscapes. Mr. Ford indicated that he has heard these voices and came to understand the importance of preserving the Greenbelt in its existing boundaries. With the recent statement from Mr. Ford, the Greenbelt now has support from the leaders of all provincial parties.

The Greenbelt’s unique protected status benefits rural economies and agricultural communities, generating $9.1 billion in economic activity each year and 161,000 jobs. The Greenbelt provides opportunity for recreational activity for the more than 9 million people living in or around its boundaries. Its forests, wetlands and soils are critical for climate change resilience and adaptation in the most densely populated region in Canada.

Ontarians know the unique and irreplaceable value that the Greenbelt provides us all.
