Thursday October 2nd was an exciting night for the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation.
That evening, Foundation's Niagara Office staff joined 300 of Niagara’s top volunteers, executives, and philanthropists at the Holiday Inn & Suites Parkway Conference Centre for the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce’s 2015 Niagara Business Achievement Awards Ceremony.
The Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation was thrilled to be nominated for the Environmental Leadership Award, and ecstatic to win it. Sponsored and presented by Horizon Utilities, this award is chosen by a panel of judges that take into account practices, projects and community engagement in this field. Nominated alongside Flat Rock Cellars for their innovative and environmentally responsible wine production technologies, and Greening Niagara for their education-in-action programs, to win in this category was truly an honour.
We've been so excited to be out on the ground really getting involved in Niagara. The opening of our permanent Niagara office in September 2014 allowed us to be more focused on environmental issues facing our area specifically, and bring more awareness to the unique characteristics of this particular part of the Greenbelt, which covers most of North Niagara.
We've spoken in a sit down charrette with Niagara farmers, planners, and environmentalists to bring a Niagara voice to the future of the Greenbelt throughout the 2015 Review, bringing to light issues that are distinct to the region. In partnership with farmers’ markets and events, we have met so many faces that are excited to be a part of the movement towards a strong and robust Greenbelt.
Thank you to the GNCC and the community of Niagara for allowing us to thrive!
