A New World -Wide Network Emerges from Global Greenbelts Conference in Toronto, Ontario
TORONTO – MARCH 29, 2011 Ontario’s Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation is proud to announce that it will take the lead on facilitating the establishment of a world-wide Greenbelt Network. The Network was founded at the Global Greenbelts Conference in Toronto, Ontario on March 24th, 2011.
This Network will provide an ongoing conversation across the globe for solutions to universal greenbelt challenges like enhancing thriving rural communities, providing sustainable urban settlements and protecting valuable water resources. The Network will also provide knowledge and experience through exchange of information, as well as will advocate for new greenbelts and growth of existing ones. During last week’s Global Greenbelts Conference, this pioneering idea became a reality, as one by one, delegates from over 16 countries from across 4 continents joined the international alliance.
“The energy in the room when the network was announced was overwhelming and inspiring. Given that Ontario’s Greenbelt is a world-leader, it only makes sense that we take the lead on this initiative. This is the beginning of a lot of necessary work, but we are excited to get started,” said Burkhard Mausberg, President, Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation.
The Ontario Greenbelt is prime farmland, wetlands, and green spaces around the Greater Golden Horseshoe, supported by a world-leading law. It gives us clean water and healthy local food and is the largest Greenbelt in the world. It saves Ontario taxpayers $2.6 billion per year in environmental services and provides $5.4 billion to Ontario’s economy through farming and food production. The Greenbelt Foundation works to provide support to Ontario’s Greenbelt through granting, research and communications.
