Bringing Culture and Generations Together


Beginning in the middle March, Twenty-five seniors and fourteen youth, ages 14-18 have been working hard in the greenhouse. They have been growing seedlings (a lot of which are world crops) that they will later plant in the Global Roots gardens at the Stop Community Food Centre. 

The seven Global Roots plots are each devoted to particular ethnic communities with large populations in Toronto—Chinese, South Asian, Somalian, Italian, Latin American, Polish and Filipino—and each grows an immensely diverse range of vegetables and herbs, including okra, bitter melon, cardamom, chiles, eggplant and lemongrass. The gardeners meet once a week to take care of the crops, socialize and cook food together.

The senior gardeners have also been involved in the “New Crop Animation Project, Funded in part by the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation, the project is a collaboration between The Stop and the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre. The Global Roots gardeners have been taste-testing and providing horticultural advice and assistance to Greenbelt farmers who are also raising crops—like callaloo and the ever-popular bitter melon—not traditionally grown in the province. Some have even sourced seeds from Vineland and tested them out in the Global Roots gardens.
