Mushrooms, Peaches, Corn, Blueberries – Oh my!

Ontario’s Greenbelt has a bounty of fresh food and this week I had the opportunity to get out and meet some farmers’. On August 16th, we were at Christie Lake Conservation Area for a press conference announcing the line-up for the Greenbelt Harvest Picnic this coming Saturday, August 27th.

While at the press conference we met a variety of farmers’ participating in the Greenbelt Harvest Picnic – ManoRun Organic FarmsPlan B Organic Farm,Featherstone Farms and Hearts Content Organic Farm.  It was great to chat with the farmers’ and we even had the opportunity to take home some of their fresh produce. Plan B Organic Farm had freshly picked shitake mushrooms, garlic and yellow watermelon. I cooked the mushrooms with the garlic and yellow and green zucchini last night. The mushrooms were so buttery and smooth, a real treat.

On our way back from the press conference we stopped at a farmers’ market along Highway 5 where I stocked up on peaches, blueberries and corn. Wow what a feast I had that night - delicious sweet corn and blueberry peach crisp for dessert. Not sure how much there was for leftovers.

Get out next weekend and join the areas great farmers’ and artisans at the Greenbelt Harvest Picnic. You’ll leave with some amazing produce and a full belly from the local food vendors.
