Hamilton, May 9, 2008 - The New Ottawa Street Farmers' Market will be celebrating its Grand Opening on Friday May 9th from 9:30 – 10:30. This Market, formerly located at Centre Mall has been in existence for 53 years and is excited about their new location on Ottawa Street. They are also excited about their new look, new logo, the advertising and promotions campaign for 2008 and their partnership with the Ottawa Street BIA.
"These are all new programs for the Market", said Tom Shepherd, the new Ottawa Street Farmers' Market Manager. "This Market has never undertaken programming such as this before. We are also recruiting new stallholders to increase the variety of product available at the market, but our main focus remains selling fresh produce grown by local farmers. There's nothing like knowing that the fruits and vegetables you buy are direct from the grower."
"We're really excited that the Market will be part of the retail community on Ottawa Street", said Executive Director Patty Despinic – "there are so many opportunities for cross promotions between the market and traditional retail and we'll be exploring them all!"
The celebration also centres on the launch of a new local food map produced by Hamilton Eat Local and Environment Hamilton project. This map is a great resource for the community at large to identify the location of local farmers and buy directly from them.
Councillor Sam Merulla is pleased a new home was found for the market. "Both the Ottawa Street Farmers' Market and Hamilton Eat Local are terrific examples of the vibrancy of the East End of Hamilton."
The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on Friday, May 9 at 10:00 a.m. at the Market location – Municipal Car Park 2C, between Edinburgh and Cannon. All media is invited to join with us.
"We are particularly grateful to Café Limoncello. They are providing food for our event – featuring ingredients grown by farmers at the market. This will mark the start to a new innovative venture for this organization," says Mr. Shepherd.
