THIS WEEKEND, BE A TRAIL GRAZER
New Beamsville Bench Vineyard Trail opens at Graze the Bench in Beamsville this Saturday
Beamsville (May 28, 2013) - The host wineries of the annual Graze the Bench festival are suggesting that guests opt for their trail shoes this weekend. The group of seven wineries has created a new trail that will enable visitors to walk the event route through the scenic vineyards that produce their award-winning wines. Adjacent to the dramatic rock faces of the Niagara Escarpment, this section of the Beamsville Bench is a jewel in Wine Country with its rolling vineyards, naturalized areas and beautiful vistas of orchards leading to Lake Ontario. And now, visitors can experience it in a new way.
The Beamsville Bench Vineyard Trail was funded by the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation and the seven wineries of the Beamsville Bench Winery Association. The self-guided path will be open year-round, with information and maps available at Fielding Estates Winery, Hidden Bench, The Organized Crime Winery, Angels Gate Winery, Rosewood Estate Winery, Thirty Bench Wine Makers and Peninsula Ridge Estate Winery.
Philip Dowell, winemaker at Angels Gate Winery, was the inspiration for the trail. While farming vineyards at the base of a beautiful section of the Bruce Trail, Philip has long admired the stunning views and unique rock formations of the area. By enabling wine enthusiasts and hikers to access vineyard paths that are otherwise inaccessible, he felt that people could better understand how wineries are an integral part of the agricultural and natural landscape. Philip and representatives from all seven wineries will act as stewards of the trail throughout the year.
The trail is an easy 4.5 km walking path through the vineyards with short sections on Mountainview Road. An optional Bruce Trail hike that connects The Organized Crime Winery with Angels Gate would add a steep and rugged - but very rewarding - 1.5 km to the trip. Peninsula Ridge Estate Winery will offer a vineyard walk in their expansive vineyards but is not currently connected by footpath.
The official opening of the trail will take place during Graze the Bench this weekend in Beamsville. All seven wineries will have live entertainment, will be pouring new release and favourite vintage wines and will be offering amazing dishes from local chefs including food truck pioneers el gastronomo vagobundo and the Tide & Vine Oyster Co. A Greenbeltfresh.ca Farmers Market will be set up at Thirty Bench Winemakers showcasing more of the bounty of the Greenbelt. Information and event tickets are available at grazethebench.com or any of the participating wineries.
The Beamsville Bench Vineyard Trail is funded by a grant from the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation.
Graze the Bench is an annual celebration of the 7 wineries of the Beamsville Bench Winery Association and is presented by Audi Centre Oakville, The Grimsby Lincoln News and Schott Zwiesel. The 2013 event takes place June 1 & 2. www.grazethebench.com.
