The Greenbelt Foundation is an independent, charitable organization dedicated to promoting and sustaining Ontario’s Greenbelt. Position Overview:  

The Data Management Specialist is a key member of the Research and Policy team and reports to the Foundation’s Manager, Research and Policy. The Data Management Specialist will primarily support data collection, management, and analysis from various sources and projects, and communicate effectively to stakeholders. Additionally, the position will support the development and implementation of data-sharing agreements with external partners, track expenditures and budgets for various projects, and report project results to target audiences.  

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:  

Data Collection, Management, and Quality Assurance  

  • Support Foundation projects and research by collecting and managing data from various sources, including data sets from external partners and from spreadsheets, interviews, surveys, and other relevant channels.  
  • Implement efficient file management, organization, and archiving to enhance data accessibility and facilitate secure retrieval of important documents. 
  • Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of the collected data. Implement processes to validate, clean, and rectify data discrepancies to maintain high data quality standards. 
  • Establish and maintain secure and reliable data storage systems to safeguard sensitive information and adhere to data privacy regulations.  
  • Consult with various organizations to identify data needs and sources including agricultural organizations, NGOs, community-based groups, conservation authorities, universities, industry associations, municipal and provincial staff, and other organizations. 
  • Support the development of data-sharing agreements, coordinate data-sharing requirements, and file preparation. Facilitate timely and accurate data exchange with relevant parties.  

Research and Data Analysis  

  • Contribute to data-driven research projects including project support on data retrieval, analysis and interpretation. One such project involves measuring and monitoring the effectiveness of Ontario’s Greenbelt. 
  • Utilize data visualization techniques to create dynamic and impactful visualizations, charts, graphs, and maps to effectively communicate the data results and research findings to diverse stakeholders and audiences, making complex information easily understandable. 
  • Collaborate closely with the Communications team to develop compelling and informative assets that share key findings with various audiences.  

General Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Support the development of contracts, agreements, and terms of reference.  
  • Manage project budgets, including processing payments, submitting invoices, tracking expenses, and ensuring budget compliance. 
  • Develop reports to funders, highlighting progress, milestones, and financial performance in line with the funded activities. 

Qualifications / Competencies: 

  • A degree in a relevant field, such as Data Science, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Information Systems, or a related discipline is preferred. 
  • Knowledgeable in basic data management concepts and practices, including data entry, quality assurance, data cleaning, data validation, and data organization.  
  • Strong proficiency in data entry and manipulation using software such as Microsoft Excel, along with data analysis and visualization tools for creating informative and visually appealing data visualizations. 
  • 1-3 years of experience in data or project management is beneficial but not mandatory. 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with an attention to detail to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. 
  • Demonstrated project management skills. 
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software is an asset. 
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and present data insights clearly.  
  • The ability to adapt, collaborate with team members, and lend expertise to areas outside your primary responsibilities will be viewed as a strong asset. 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

Compensation ranges from $55,000-65,000 annually and is negotiable according to demonstrated experience and ability. This is a one-year, full-time (40 hours/week) contract position with the possibility for renewal based on available funding. Part-time arrangements can also be considered for the right candidate.
