The festive season is approaching and the Greenbelt is getting lit up with holiday cheer! It’s the time of year to cozy up with a warm beverage and enjoy the local celebrations in your town! In York Region you don’t have to travel too far to find the holiday magic. There are great events and fun winter recreational activities to get you in the holiday mood right in the Greenbelt!

Get out to a winter festival

Do you want all the holiday fun at one stop? Find a winter festival or attend a tree lighting ceremony in your town. Hang out with your neighbours and watch your community tree get lit up! Nothing says happy holidays like twinkling lights on a Douglas Fir. Here are a few Holiday festivals in York Region


Pick your own Greenbelt tree

Scotch Pine? Douglas Fir? Balsam fir? White Pine? What’s your favourite type of tree for the holidays? You can find them all in the Greenbelt!

Go D.I.Y

Get creative and dive into some D.I.Y’s for the holidays! Make some of your own holiday goodies. 


Enjoy some outdoor skating in your area! Here are some great outdoor skating rinks in York Region.
  • Newmarket: Tim Hortons Skating and Water Feature – River Walk Commons
    Enjoy some outdoor skating in the heart of downtown Newmarket. There will be tunes, lights and snacks!
  • Richmond Hill: Richmond Green Skate Trail
    Skate through a 250 metre looped trail through the outdoors! This skate trail is tree-lined with twinkling lights and music. A great idea for a crisp evening.

  • Markham: Markham Civic Centre Ice Rink
    Located at 101 Town Centre Blvd, north-west corner of Highway 7 & Warden Ave. The rink is open from 10 AM to 10 PM daily


Take a wintery walk

When the snow comes piling down, strap on some snowshoes and take a stroll through the York Region Forest , join a community walk or take a self-guided stroll Greenbelt Walks guides.


Ski in the moonlight

Wanna make some strides under the moonlight? Enjoy some cross-country skiing in the Greenbelt!

  • Kortright Trail: 9550 Pine Valley Drive, Vaughan
    Length: 15 Km
    Admission: $6.50/adult  (rentals not available)


Take in a Greenbelt photo exhibit

If you’re in Kleinburg enjoying all of the heritage gems, stop by the McMichael Art Collection and check out the Greenbelt exhibit - 20 breathtaking photos are on display. While there, stop by McMichael's "Santa's Workshop" display and snap a holiday photo. 


Go Sledding

When the snow days come around, grab anything slippery that you can sit on and head to your neighborhood hill for a great afternoon of tobogganing! Mussleman’s Lake just happens to be the highest point of York Region.
